One of my two Christmas whiskies this year was this GlenDronach single cask — an exclusive bottling for De Monnik Dranken, the importer of GlenDronach and other whiskies.
In this case, it’s a 14-year-old single cask matured in a Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon. A puncheon is a cask type that is officially about 320 litres, but this one must have been larger — since 708 bottles were filled from it at cask strength. That means there was roughly 500 litres in the barrel originally.
Nose
Right away you notice how intensely heavy this whisky has been sherried. It’s so dominant that at first I couldn’t smell the spirit at all. Deep fruitiness with peach and apricot. A bit later, some sherry cask wood comes through with smells of raisins and orange.
Palate
On the palate the whisky is far bolder than I expected given the soft sherry on the nose. Here the sherry influence is actually relatively light, and the spirit gets a chance to show itself.
Finish
Very much in line with the nose: lots of — perhaps too much — Pedro Ximenez influence with raisins and other dried fruits. After a while the finish becomes a bit spicier with dry wood and cake-like flavours.
Overall Thoughts
In the end, I’m not all that satisfied with this whisky. I do enjoy whiskies aged or finished in sherry casks, but I like to still taste the character of the whisky itself — and that’s pretty tough here. Especially on the nose and in the finish it’s almost only the PX sherry you taste: dried fruit and European oak. The whisky itself only really gets a brief moment to show itself on the palate before it’s gone again.

Malt Fascination 
Hoe zou je hem beoordelen puur als drank.
Dus los van het feit dat je whisky wil proeven omdat het whisky is.
Zeg je dan het is lekker maar smaakt eigenlijk niet naar whisky en krijgt daarom een laag cijfer? Of vind je het ook echt niet lekker?
Da’s een leuke. Het smaakt in principe allemaal best aardig, vooral de smaak zelf. Het is dus best een lekker drankje, maar voor een lekker drankje hoef ik geen GlenDronach single cask te kopen.
Uiteindelijk krijgt ie alsnog 3 sterren he 😉 Als ik hem niet lekker zou vinden zou ie aanzienlijk lager scoren.

De flessen die wij uit dit vat ( #1468 ) hebben gehaald komen niet overeen met het aantal dat jij hier aangeeft. Heb jij dezelfde Single Cask gehad?
Over het algemeen is dit een typische ‘love it or hate it’ whisky. Wij hebben ‘m op dag van release in NL laten proeven in de winkel en een deel van de mensen was lyrisch en kocht ‘m meteen ( toch gene gering aankoopbedrag, € 78,95 p.fles ) en een deel vond het helemaal niks. Feit is dat het een whisky is met heel uitgesproken smaak. Snickers deed het ons aan denken. Volle chocolade, karamel en noten. Heel warm en zwaar ook wel.
GEEN fouten hoor. Dat zegt iedereen die hem bij Bresser en Timmer vandaan heeft. Echter gaat het hier om van #1480, en is deze WEL selected voor De Monnik. Ze stoken daar meerdere vaten per jaar 🙂
Ok, maar dan kun je wellicht beter de ‘Verkrijgbaar bij o.a. ‘ weghalen aangezien zowel ik ( DH17 ) als Jolanda ( Drinks & Gifts ) de 1996 Single Cask nr. 1468 Oloroso Sherry hebben. Zo erg verwarrend… De Oloroso is overigens wel veel beter in balans dan de PX welke jij hier beschrijft. Wellicht leuk om eens naast elkaar te proeven?
Ik heb zelf een fles bij de distileerderij vandaan en dat is ook een 14YO uit 1996 maar op Oloroso sherry butt. Die vind ik erg lekker.
Er zijn volgens mij meerdere 14yo uit 1996 op diverse finishes uitgebracht.
Ja, ze hebben veel spullen van rond die tijd uitgebracht. Ik vind overigens wel vaker dat de PX vaten een te sterke smaakinvloed hebben. Er zijn maar weinig whisky’s die het kunnen hebben (denk hierbij aan Lagavulin DE, die kan het heel goed dragen).
