BrewDog

This is not a lowest common deniminator beer.

This is an assertive beer.

We don’t care if you don’t like it.

We do not merely aspire to the proclaimed heady heights of conformity through neutrality and blandness.

It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to appreciate the depth, character and quality of this premium craft brewed beer.

You probably don’t even care that this rebellious little beer contains no preservatives or additives and uses only the finest fresh natural ingredients.

Just go back to drinking your mass marketed, bland, cheaply made watered down lager, and close the door behind you.

And with that, new personal heroes of mine were born. This is what it reads on the back label of BrewDog‘s Punk IPA. I was already very interested in IPA, and especially in small batch craft brewing, as I am in small batch craft distilled whisky. BrewDog caught my attention with their off the beaten path style of marketing and lack of subtelty.

Punk IPA

Apart from the cool back label, the beer itself is pretty fantastic with mountains of hops in there, a full flavour like I’ve not tasted in ages in a beer. So, go out there and get your hands on some of their stuff.

Will my fandom mean I will love all of their stuff: No. I doubt I will like their porter and stouts, since I don’t really enjoy that style of beer, but it does mean I will try to taste as many as I can, and in case of the Punk IPA, as often as I can!

I really do like their beers, but there ‘against’ mass marketed and overwatered beers proposition is a bit ‘incorrect’ seen the prices that they’ll charge you.

A random beer from Brewdog like Hardcore or Punk IPA will cost you about 2 euros. The beers they put in pillory are about 0,50 cents each. So it would only be right to compete with beers that are 2 euros as well. And in that market they aren’t that great, super-deluxe or way better than others (I think).

After saying that I must admit the Chaos Theory and Hardcore IPA where amazing! But never, ever spend any money on Nanny State…

    • True, there is a price difference, but I think that is mostly due to their size and ingredients. The entire fact that mass-marketed beers are getting sweeter every year to appeal to more people, with less hops-syrup (no real hops included anyway), there is still a good point.

And, most 2 euro beers in the supermarket are still major brands.

BTW: I will buy one Nanny State and try it, but even BrewDog warns against it on their site, I believe…

I bought a bottle a little while back (to use as part of a comparison tasting of it and Tactical Nuclear Penguin…still not opened either) and the lady in the shop apologised, said she felt bad taking my money and then just took what change I had rather than the listed price 🙂
