Smögen: A New (Swedish) Whisky on the Horizon

A short news item recently appeared on www.whiskypassion.nl:

It had already been something of an open secret for a while, but it is now official — a second whisky distillery is being actively developed in Sweden.

The new distillery is called Smögen, located on the west coast of Sweden. The initiative comes from Pär Caldenby, a whisky enthusiast and author who has been involved in the whisky world for years. With Smögen, Sweden takes another step toward establishing itself as a serious whisky-producing country.

At the time of writing, the distillery is still in its early stages. Plans include traditional pot still distillation and a clear focus on quality rather than volume. Given Sweden’s climate and the growing interest in Nordic whisky, this is an exciting development to keep an eye on.

Swedish whisky is still relatively young, but with distilleries like Mackmyra already proving that high-quality whisky can be made outside Scotland, the arrival of Smögen adds another interesting name to the list. It will be fascinating to see how this distillery develops over the coming years — and, of course, what its whisky will eventually taste like.
